I was intrigued about the GM ignition lawsuit so I googled the guys name to find other articles. Guess what popped up, A Facebook page. Not exactly what I was looking for, but I clicked on it and it was a guy from Oklahoma, conveniently he posted pictures of a wreck of a Saturn in 2014. What do you guys think about a Saturn after a 60 MPH wreck?

If that was a 60 mph wreck, Saturns must be stronger than Volvos. Unless he crashed into pillows or something.

I'm guessing a "wreak at 60MPH" rather than "60MPH wreak", but still.

I wasn’t going to say it up top, even though I implied it. I’ve had a car that looked a good bit worse after 20 mph.

If he hit a pole, that’s maybe 30 mph, if he hit a tree, no more than 15.

It’s amazing what hitting a yielding obstacle makes for. 60MPH vs. 20MPH, you only need the impact to last three times as long as a *hard impact* at 60 to roughly third the impulse peak, and for the impact to last around nine times as long as a hard impact at 20(to bleed off the kinetic energy) or for the obstacle to absorb a larger quantity of the energy - et voila, similar results.

The other thing is what does he mean by 60MPH wreck... it may sound obvious but was he going 60mph at the time he slammed on the brakes. Realize that the issue with the ignition switch failure is that once the engine shuts of things like power brakes, power steering, go away and stopping becomes a much greater problem. Also of course the focal point if the lawsuit the airbags stopped working. However just because the power brakes are not working does not mean that he was not able to slow from 60 to some slower speed.

Also if he rear ended a car that was moving the same direction, while travelling at 60mph the actual speed of the impact would be the difference, yet he may call it 60mph because that is what he was doing at the time of the accident. Not sure if the police where able to recover information from the ECU in the ignition switch accidents.

It also appears to be an off center collision on the passenger side, which may mean that some of the velocity was spent redirecting the vehicle.

I came upon an accident on the German Autobahn in which an Ambulance rear ended a Military truck, The Military trucks are limited to 80kmh, while the ambulance could be have been travelling at any speed. The stretch of Autobahn it occurred is one of the better stretches for high speed travel due to no speed limits, low traffic, and fairly wide open straight autobahn. Most traffic in this area travels at close to 200kmh, so it is quite possible the ambulance was doing 180kmh or about 60mph faster than the military truck.

The ambulance suffered similar damage as what you see in this picture, but, due to the off center hit, it was actually in front of the military truck. As well you can tell from the skid marks that it spun 360deg as it went past the truck. Everyone in the ambulance survived, although at least one person was in bad condition (on a stretcher receiving first aid, the others where walking around applying bandages to their wounds.

The Military truck had no damage at all.
